Common Signs of Arthritis in Dogs
Does Your Dog Have Canine Osteoarthritis?
Canine osteoarthritis (or "dog arthritis") can be painful. Signs of the pain are not always easy to recognize. That's because dogs in pain, like other animals, are "genetically programmed" by nature not to show their vulnerability. In addition, individual dogs respond to pain in different ways, depending on factors such as age, general health and breed. When dogs do express pain, they generally do so through changes in their behavior. Dogs suffering from arthritis may show signs like:
- Lethargy
- Stiffness
- Limping
- Reluctance to move
- Aggressive or defensive reactions to touch
- Unusual barking
- Uncharacteristic hiding
Signs of dog arthritis may also vary according to the severity of the disease. In general, the more severe the disease, the more intense the signs.

As a class, cyclooxygenase inhibitory NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal, kidney or liver side effects. These are usually mild, but may be serious.
